Frank is one of the most successful biathletes of all times. He was two times olympic champion of the relay runners and he won two olympic silver medals. Furthermore there were a world championship in sprint and in pursuit race, and innumerable pursuit medals. He won the last of his gold medals at his last race at the world championships 2004 in Oberhof.

Peter Bayer started to work as an offical in the service of the "Deutscher Ski-Verband (DSV)".  Later on he was for many years secretary general of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) where he has set the course for the success story of the biathlon sport. He always had an eye for the needs of the athletes. Needless to say, that without him this kind of sport wouldn't be at the today's stage.

Achievement award: Magdalena Forsberg, SWE. Her grand appearance at the Achievement Award 2009 has shown once again the outstanding personality of Magdalena Forsberg: Her charming speech captivated anyone and she received standing ovation. Her charms and her appearance have been contributed to her career over many years, so that she became one of the most successful and popular female biathletes. The impressive numbers are only one part of her success story: Beside 42 World Cup wins she won six times straight overall wins in the World Cup and furthermore six gold medals in the World Championships. But the Winter Olympics did not bring her much luck. Even she came to Salt Lake City as the female favorite she could only win two bronze medals. Regardless of this her degree of popularity was not affected. Magdalena Forsberg had a significant part that female Biathlon nowadays is on an equal footing to male biathlon. She came from cross-country skiing and was a magnificent shot too. Her success was closely connected with Wolfgang Pichler who has got the "Trainer of the Year" award in the same year where Forsberg became the Achievement Award presented by IBU president Anders Besseberg.

During his dedication as a race offical of the International Biathlete Union Janez Vodicar has optimized proceedings of sports competitions and he always had an eye for the needs of the athletes. Amongst others he deserves the credit that biathlon had become such an impressive impact on TV.

Achievement award: Klas Lestander, SWE.
Klas Lestander was the first olympic champion in the short history of biathlon sport. He won in 1960 in Squaw Valley (USA) in front of the Finn Antti Tyrväinen and the Russian Aleksandr Privalov the at the time unique 20km championship. To hand out the achievement award the old but pretty fit Lestander came with his son all the way from Sweden to the ceremony.

The jury of the BIATHLON AWARD

The jury of the BIATHLON AWARD consists of Gottlieb Taschler (ITA), Vicepresident of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) as representative of the IBU, Frank Luck, olympic champion, as a representative of the active athletes, Sigi Heinrich, Eurosport annotator, as representative of media, and Helmut Hanus, the founder of the BIATHLON AWARD. This board nominates the nominees in the categories „Male Biathlete of the Year“, „Female Biathlete of the Year“, „Newcomer of the Year“, and „Trainer Award/Females/Males“. All trainers vote at the end of the season with a vote per category. And, if they like, they are able to add further names to the list. The written result is then evaluated by a notary, and communicated on the evening of the award ceremony. The media award is granted by the jury as well, while the achievement award is suggested by Gottlieb Taschler and the jury in close agreement to the IBU. The achievement award is also communicated on the award ceremony evening.
